Five of the original Viking ships from the Skuldelev discoveries, which date back more than a millennium, are on display at the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, Denmark. The museum's primary attraction is a permanent display of the Skuldelev ships, five authentic Viking vessels that were dug up in the area in 1962. Additionally, the Viking Ship Museum teaches and does research in the areas of experimental archaeology, marine archaeology, and maritime history. In addition to hosting a number of scholarly conferences, the museum also has a research library.Five Viking ships were purposefully wrecked at Skuldelev in Roskilde Fjord around 1070 to block the most crucial fairway and shield Roskilde from a seaborne enemy attack. In 1962, these ships—later dubbed the Skuldelev ships—were dug up.They were discovered to be five distinct ship categories, ranging from warships to cargo ships.
The five recently found Skuldelev ships were the primary focus of the 1969 construction of the Viking Ship Museum, which looks out over the Roskilde Fjord inlet.
