In the southern part of the Danish island of Funen, close to Kvaerndrup, stands Egeskov Castle (Danish: Egeskov Slot). It is the best-preserved Renaissance water castle in Europe. In 1405, Egeskov was first mentioned.Frands Brockenhuus built the castle's structure in 1554.
The majority of Danish noblemen constructed their homes as fortifications due to the problems brought on by the Count's Feud (Danish: Grevens fejde), general civil turmoil, and a civil war that introduced the Protestant Reformation. Built on oaken piles, the castle is situated in a little lake that is hardly deeper than five meters (16 feet). At first, a drawbridge was the only way to get in. The name Egeskov (oak forest) comes from the belief that it took an entire forest of oak trees to build the foundation.Because the castle is made up of two long structures that are joined by a thick double wall, defenders can leave one house and battle from the other. The double wall, which is more than a meter thick, has a well and hidden stairways. The two circular corner towers allowed defenders to strike an enemy's flanks. Arrow slits, scorching holes, and artillery ports are further medieval defenses. "Monks bricks" are a type of huge medieval brick that makes up the fortress. The conical towers are made up of several independent panels.
