The world's deepest lake is Lake Baikal, a rift lake.It is located between the Republic of Buryatia to the southeast and the federal territory of Irkutsk Oblast to the northwest in southern Siberia, Russia. At 31,722 km2 (12,248 sq mi), slightly bigger than Belgium, Lake Baikal is the second biggest lake in Eurasia after the Caspian Sea and the seventh largest lake in the world by surface area. With a maximum depth of 1,642 meters (5,387 feet), Lake Baikal is the deepest lake in the world. Despite this, it is the largest freshwater lake by volume, holding 23,615.39 km3 (5,670 cu mi) of water, or 22–23% of the world's fresh surface water, more than all of the Great Lakes in North America combined.
At 25–30 million years old, it is also the oldest lake in the world and one of the purest.Roughly 19 percent of the world's unfrozen freshwater is thought to be in the lake. There are thousands of plant and animal species in Lake Baikal, many of which are indigenous to the area. On the eastern side of the lake, where the mean temperature ranges from a winter minimum of -19 °C (-2 °F) to a summer maximum of 14 °C (57 °F), Buryat tribes also call it home. They raise goats, camels, cattle, sheep, and horses [16]. The loosely defined area surrounding Lake Baikal is sometimes referred to as Baikalia, whereas the area east of the lake is known as Transbaikalia or the Transbaikal.
