Wales' largest city and capital is Cardiff. Officially known as the City and County of Cardiff, Cardiff is a major location with a population of 372,089 in 2022. In the UK, the city ranks ninth in terms of size. Cardiff is the county town of the medieval county of Glamorgan and, from 1974 to 1996, of South Glamorgan. It is situated in the Cardiff Capital Region in southeast Wales. It is part of the Eurocities network, which consists of the biggest cities in Europe. Prior to the early 19th century, it was a little town, but when coal mining started in the area, its status as a port aided in its growth.

It was designated as a city in 1905 and the capital of Wales in 1955. The towns of Dinas Powys and Penarth are part of the Cardiff urban area, which encompasses a wider area outside the county line.Cardiff serves as both the seat of the Senedd, the Welsh Parliament, and Wales' principal commercial hub. The population of the unitary authority region was 362,400 according to the 2021 census. There were 479,000 people living in the larger metropolitan region in 2011. According to a 2011 list of alternate tourist destinations by National Geographic magazine, it came in sixth place worldwide.With 21.3 million visitors in 2017, it is Wales' most visited location.Cardiff is home to Wales' major national broadcasters and is a key hub for television and film production (including the 2005 relaunch of Doctor Who, Torchwood, and Sherlock)

Cardiff Bay is home to the Wales Millennium Centre arts complex and the Senedd building. Cardiff Bay and the center are still working on initiatives like the BBC Drama Village, Cardiff International Sports Village, and a new business zone.
