Wieliczka Salt Mine, Poland

The village of Wieliczka, close to Kraków in southern Poland, is home to the Wieliczka Salt Mine (Polish: Kopalnia soli Wieliczka).

The upwelling brine there has been used since the Neolithic era to manufacture sodium chloride, or table salt. One of the oldest salt mines still in operation in the world, the Wieliczka mine was dug out in the 13th century and produced table salt continuously until 1996. The Żupy Krakowskie (Kraków Salt Mines) corporation ran the royal salt mine for the duration of its existence. In 1996, commercial salt mining was stopped due to mine floods and declining salt prices.

Today, the Wieliczka Salt Mine is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Polish Historic Monument (Pomnik Historii). Shafts and winding tunnels, exhibits of ancient salt-mining equipment, an underground lake, four chapels, countless statues carved by miners from the rock salt, and more recent sculptures by modern artists are some of its attractions.Numerous figures and four chapels sculpted by the miners out of the rock salt make the mine one of Poland's designated national Historic Monuments (Pomniki historii). New carvings created by modern artisans have been added to the earlier sculptures. The Wieliczka Salt Mine receives about 1.2 million visitors a year.Nicolaus Copernicus, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Alexander von Humboldt, Fryderyk Chopin, Dmitri Mendeleyev, Bolesław Prus, Ignacy Paderewski, Robert Baden-Powell, Jacob Bronowski (who was responsible for filming parts of The Ascent of Man in the mine), the von Unrug family (a well-known Polish-German royal family), Karol Wojtyła (later Pope John Paul II), former U.S. President Bill Clinton, and numerous others have visited this location.[Reference required .The mine is divided into two sections: the Museum Route and the Tourist Route. The first three floors of the mine make up the Tourist Route. The 2.2-kilometer trail takes about 1.5 hours to complete. It is well-known for its St. Kinga Chapel and interior design elements cut from salt and brine lakes, including a room for a sound and light show featuring Frédéric Chopin's music. After touring the Tourist Route, visitors can proceed to the Museum Route.
