San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Spain

Located northwest of the region in the southeast side of the Sierra de Guadarrama, at the base of Mount Abantos and Las Machotas, San Lorenzo de El Escorial, also called El Escorial de Arriba, is a town and municipality in the Community of Madrid, Spain. It is 29 miles (kilometers) from Madrid. It is in charge of the judicial party of the same name. To distinguish it from the nearby community of El Escorial, also called El Escorial de Abajo, the settlement is commonly referred to as El Escorial de Arriba. One of the most notable structures in the town and a major example of Spanish Renaissance architecture is the Monastery of El Escorial. The Royal Library within the Monastery is particularly noteworthy.

On November 2, 1984, UNESCO designated the monastery and its historic surrounds as "El Escorial, monastery and site" as a World Heritage Site.Additionally, the site is protected on Spain's heritage register; the Community of Madrid has designated it a Property of Cultural Interest since June 21, 2006.At an elevation of 1753 meters, San Lorenzo de El Escorial is situated on the southern slopes of Mount Abantos. The majority of the urban area lies over 1,000 meters (3,300 feet), while the municipality's average elevation is 1,032 meters (3,386 feet). At first, the hamlet sprang up around the Monastery of El Escorial and then slowly spread up the mountain. The town had significant urban growth in the 20th and 21st centuries, especially in the direction of Mount Abantos' southeast side.

San Lorenzo de El Escorial's primary economic activities include trade, tourism, and hospitality. Within the Madrid community, the municipality is one of the most popular tourist sites. Madrid tourism is typically the starting point for visitors' day tours. Compared to other historic cities in the area like Alcalá de Henares, Aranjuez, or Chinchón, the number of visitors spending the night is negligible.
