The four-winged, three-story Konopiště Castle (pronounced zámek Konopiště in Czech and Schloss Konopischt in German) is situated in Konopiště, which is now a part of the municipality of Benešov in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. It gained notoriety as the final home of Austria's Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir apparent to the Austro-Hungarian crown, whose murder in Sarajevo precipitated World War I. Gavrilo Princip's bullet, which killed him, is on display at the castle's isolated museum. Since 1971, Konopiště has been accessible to the general public. The "Obizzi-Este collection" (the third largest European collection of armory and medieval weapons from Castello del Catajo, Padua, Italy), a shooting hall with moving targets, a garden with Italian Renaissance statues and greenhouses, and the living quarters of Franz Ferdinand—who was also an avid hunter—are all open to visitors.Over the years, some of the most notable historical individuals have called this edifice, which began as a Gothic castle in the late 13th century, home. The last owner was the Archduke Franz Ferdinand d'Este, the successor to the Austro-Hungarian throne, who was slain at Sarajevo in 1914 together with his wife Sophia.
