The Netherlands' city, Amsterdam, is home to 1,500 bridges, roughly 90 islands, and more than 100 kilometers (62 miles) of grachten (canals). Concentric belts known as the Grachtengordel surround the city and are formed by the three main canals (Herengracht, Prinsengracht, and Keizersgracht), which were excavated during the Dutch Golden Age in the 17th century. There are 1550 imposing structures beside the main waterways.A major factor in Amsterdam's reputation as the "Venice of the North" was the 2010 UNESCO World Heritage Site listing of the 17th-century canal ring area, which included the Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht, Herengracht, and Jordaan.
The Amsterdam canal system is largely the result of effective city design. As immigration increased in the early 17th century, a comprehensive design was developed that called for the construction of four major, concentric canal half-circles, with the ends resting on the IJ Bay.The fourth and longest of Amsterdam's major canals is the Prinsengracht, also known as the Prince's Canal. It bears the Prince of Orange's name. The Dutch Golden Age of the United Provinces is when the majority of the canal buildings along it were constructed. The streets of the Jordaan in the west and the Weteringbuurt in the east are connected by bridges across the Prinsengracht canal.
