The castle has undergone multiple reconstructions over the years. Originally enlarged during the Renaissance, it was reconstructed as a Baroque fortress at Adam Franz von Schwarzenberg's request at the start of the 18th century.
The castle was acquired by the Schwarzenbergs in 1661 when Baltasar Marradas's heirs sold it to Johann Adolf, Prince of Schwarzenberg. They remained in Hluboká until the end of 1939, when Adolph Schwarzenberg, the final owner, left the country to avoid the Nazis. Through a special legislative act known as the Lex Schwarzenberg, which was passed in 1947, the Schwarzenbergs lost all of their Czech holdings.
