During the Middle Ages, the cathedral of the Diocese of Utrecht was St. Martin's Cathedral, also known as Dom Church, a Gothic structure devoted to Saint Martin of Tours. Although it has been a Protestant church since 1580, it is the only pre-Reformation cathedral in the nation.
The nave collapsed in a storm in 1674 and has never been restored, leaving the tower isolated from the east end of what was once the greatest church in the Netherlands. The edifice is the one church in the Netherlands that closely approaches the style of classic Gothic architecture as evolved in France. In the Netherlands, every other Gothic church is a part of one of the several regional variations. The structure only has one tower, the city's iconic Dom Tower, which is 112 meters (367 feet) tall, unlike the majority of its French predecessors.
As part of the Lower Germanic Limes, the cathedral, Dom Tower, and Domplein were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the combined 2021–2022 session of the World Heritage Committee because of the Roman archaeological remains found inside the square.
