The Gothic-Renaissance Corvin Castle, sometimes called Hunyadi Castle or Hunedoara Castle, is located in Hunedoara, Romania. One of the Seven Wonders of Romania, it is regarded as one of the biggest castles in Europe. The castle is a massive and imposing building with tall towers, bastions, an inner courtyard, roofs of various colors, and numerous windows and balconies with stone carvings. It was built in the Renaissance-Gothic style on a rock above the smaller Zlaşti River, on the site of an earlier fortification. In addition to having a double wall for increased protection, the castle has both round and rectangular towers on either side, which is unusual for Transylvanian design at the time. Several of the towers served as jails. The Buzdugan Tower's facade was embellished with geometric motifs and was constructed exclusively for defensive purposes. Large apertures in the rectangular towers allow for the use of bigger guns.During John Hunyadi's rule, the castle underwent a transformation and became one of his most significant holdings. It evolved from a strategically enforced position to a luxurious residence. The castle's masters added towers, halls, and guest rooms to change the structure's appearance throughout time. Among the most important features of the building are the gallery, the keep, the last defense tower from John Hunyadi's era that hasn't changed, and the Capistrano Tower, which was named for the saint Franciscan priest who fought in the Battle of Belgrade in 1456.
Known as the most impressive medieval castle in Romania, Corvin Castle is a massive Gothic-style medieval building. In honor of the senior official who constructed it, it is often referred to as Hunyad Castle. A wooden bridge featuring a statue of St. John of Nepomuk, the patron saint of bridges, leads to Corvin Castle, a castle straight out of a fairy tale. The castle from the 15th century is symbolized by a raven with a gold ring. The castle is near the southwest end of the town and may be reached by following the boulevards Traian, Republicii, and Libertăţii.With its lofty rectangular towers and commanding stone carvings, Corvin Castle's military architecture and design capture both the castle's past and the wider cultural influences of the Hungarian Renaissance. The spring and fall seasons are ideal for visiting Corvin Castle because of the pleasant weather and reduced crowds. Plan your visit appropriately because the castle can get crowded in the summer, particularly in July and August. The Anjou family constructed Corvin, Romania's most magnificent Gothic-style castle, on the site of a previous Roman camp. Before Iancu de Hunedoara (Ioannes Corvinus in Latin, Hunyadi in Hungarian), the voivode of Transylvania, moved in in the middle of the 14th century, the castle functioned as a fortification.
Iancu restored the stronghold, turning it into a magnificent castle in Transylvania.A 94-foot well that was excavated into stone in the 15th century can be found in the castle's courtyard.
According to legend, three Turkish captives who were promised freedom upon completion dug the wheel.
They arrived at water after 15 years and 28 days. The castle's five-story "Nje Boisia" tower, which has multiple gun apertures and was constructed for military use, is one of its distinctive features. The tower is connected to the castle via a "suspended" hallway that is 100 feet long and supported by enormous pillars. The Serbian mercenaries who served in the castle garrison gave the tower the name "Nje Boisia," which means "Do not be afraid" in Serbian.
Despite being a museum, Corvin Castle occasionally holds special events and private parties.
High buttresses, inner courtyards, a chapel, an amazing drawbridge, a lavish Knights' Hall, the Council Room, and more than fifty chambers adorned with medieval furnishings and artwork are all hallmarks of the exquisitely maintained building.
