Jotunheimen is a hilly region in southern Norway that is around 3,500 square kilometers (1,400 square miles) in size. It is a component of the Scandinavian Mountains, a lengthy range. The Jotunheimen mountains are home to all 29 of Norway's highest summits, including Galdhøpiggen, the highest point in both Norway and Northern Europe at 2,469 meters (8,100 feet). There are over 50 designated paths in the area, ranging in length from day hikes to longer treks.Norwegian mountaineers Kristian Tandberg, George Paus, and Therese Bertheau, along with British mountaineers William Cecil Slingsby, Harold Raeburn, and Howard Priestman, were the first to pioneer mountaineering in Jotunheimen in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.In August 2006, the Jotunheimen shoe was found. The leather shoe is the earliest piece of clothing found in Scandinavia, with archaeologists estimating that it was manufactured between 1800 and 1100 BC. It was found with a wooden spade and several arrows, which led archaeologists to believe they had uncovered a significant hunting area.

In order to defend and serve as a royal palace for the city, the medieval castle known as Akershus Fortress or Akershus Castle was constructed in Oslo, Norway. The main fief and subsequently main county of Akershus, which was once one of Norway's four main districts and comprised the majority of Eastern Norway, has been named after the citadel since the Middle Ages. Up to 1919, the stronghold was part of the larger Akershus county; before 1842, it was also a part of the smaller Akershus sub-county. In addition, the castle has served as a jail, a military installation, and the temporary residence of Norway's prime minister.The Akershus Fortress is accessible to the public daily from 6:00 to 21:00, despite being a military installation. The Norwegian Resistance Museum and the Norwegian Armed Forces Museum are open for visits in addition to the castle. The eastern portion of the fortification houses the joint modern headquarters of the Norwegian Ministry of Defense and the nation's Defense Staff Norway. The stronghold is protected by His Majesty the King's Guard, which has mobile patrols at night and stationary guard positions during the day. Tourists visiting the stronghold frequently take pictures from one of the immovable guard posts at the entryway.Several Norwegian royal figures are buried in the Royal Mausoleum of the castle. On Oslo's western side is a peninsula known as Bygdøy or Bygdø. Bygdøy is administratively a part of the Frogner borough. Originally a part of Aker Municipality, it joined Oslo in 1948. In addition to being a well-liked recreational region, Bygdøy is one of Norway's most upscale residential neighborhoods, home to some of the most costly real estate in the whole nation. In addition, Bygdøy has a royal estate and five national museums. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Christiania's wealthiest families purchased rural homes on Bygdøy. By the 19th century, Bygdøy had become a favorite among the capital's wealthy and was inhabited only by the wealthy and their servants.Bygdøy boasts parks, woodlands, and beaches, including both nudist and conventional Huk beaches. Only 111 homes were located in Bygdøy in 1885; currently, the majority of the expansive gardens are divided into smaller land areas, making Bygdøy primarily a residential area while maintaining an upmarket demographic profile. This is also the location of Oscarshall, home of the Queen Joséphine Gallery, and Bygdøy Royal Estate (Bygdøy kongsgård), the King of Norway's official summer house. A significant portion of the region, including the Bygdøy Royal Estate, is shielded from development.Following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the Norwegian government started a memorial for the disaster's victims. On October 19, 2007, HM King Harald V formally unveiled the memorial, which is situated on Bygdøy's western beach.

The Sognefjord (Urban East) or Sognefjorden The longest and deepest fjord in Norway is Sogn Fjord, often known as the King of the Fjords (Norwegian: Fjordenes konge). Stretching 205 kilometers (127 miles) inland from the coast to the tiny settlement of Skjolden in the municipality of Luster, it is situated in Vestland county in Western Norway.The nearby district of Sogn is named after the fjord.The name is related to Norwegian word súg- "to suck", presumably from the surge or suction of the tidal currents at the mouth of the fjord. Settlements around the fjord and its sidearms are connected by boats. Leirvik, Ytre Oppedal, Vadheim, Høyanger, Vikøyri, Balestrand, Hermansverk, Sogndalsfjøra, Gudvangen, Flåm, Aurlandsvangen, Laerdalsøyri, Årdalstangen, Gaupne, and Solvorn are some of the larger villages on the fjord and its branches. Gudvangen, which is just 300 meters (1,000 feet) across at its narrowest point, is located next to the Nærøyfjord, a branch of the Sognefjord that is especially renowned for its pristine nature and breathtaking views. The Nærøyfjord is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the Geirangerfjord in Møre og Romsdal. The Flåm Railway is one of the steepest unsupported railway climbs in the world, rising 864 meters (2,835 feet) from the village of Flåm to Myrdal Station in under 20 kilometers (12 miles).Three of Norway's most well-known stave churches have survived around the inner end of the fjord: Borgund (30 km or 20 mi into the Laerdal valley), Kaupanger, and Urnes (along the seashore). The 4,597-meter (15,082-foot) Sognefjord Span (power lines) spans the fjord. In the globe, this is the second-largest power line span. The fjord is now a popular tourist destination, and summer visitors contribute significantly to the local economy.
