Northeastern Romania is home to the Eastern Orthodox monastery known as Sucevița Monastery. It is located in the village of Sucevița, close to the Suceviţa River, 18 kilometers from the city of Rădăuţi in Suceava County. It is situated in northwest Moldavia, in the southern portion of the historic Bukovina area. Ieremia Movilă, Gheorghe Movilă, and Simion Movilă constructed it in 1585.Along with several features common to other painted churches in northern Moldavia, the church's architecture combines Byzantine and Gothic styles. Biblical events from the Old and New Testament are depicted in mural paintings that cover both internal and exterior walls. These paintings are highly valuable artistic creations. Sucevița is among the last monasteries to be embellished with exterior paintings in the renowned Moldavian style, with the paintings dating from approximately 1601.
On the north wall, a 19th-century wooden glazed gallery was constructed. The year 1867 is carved on the thin wooden turret. The east wall is bordered by the current monastic structures. In addition to the nuns' cells, the original center section holds a museum including religious artifacts, manuscripts, icons, and embroidery. The Church of the Resurrection exhibits the earliest innovative architectural trends, but still being constructed according to the traditional Moldavian church form.
The chancel, naos, burial chamber, pronaos, and exonarthex are the five rooms that make up a large Moldavian monastery church. Tall niches on the apses no longer extend nearly to the eaves as they once did.
