Esztergom Basilica, Hungary

The Basilica of Esztergom (Hungarian: Esztergomi bazilika), also called the Primatial Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Adalbert (Hungarian: Nagyboldogasszony és Szent Adalbert prímási főszékesegyház), is an ecclesiastic basilica in Esztergom, Hungary. It is the seat of the Catholic Church in Hungary and the mother church of the Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest. It is devoted to Saint Adalbert and the Assumption of Mary. It is Hungary's biggest church. 5,600 m2 make up its interior. It is 49 meters broad and 118 meters long. It reverberates for longer than nine seconds. It features twelve windows and a semi-spherical dome in the center. It has a diameter of 33.5 meters, is 100 meters high from the outside, and has 400 steps from the crypt. It is 71.5 meters high inside, making it one of the tallest domes in the world. The huge crypt, built in Old Egyptian style in 1831, is today the resting place of late archbishops, among others, József Mindszenty, famous for his opposition to both Nazi and Communist rule.Pál Kühnel was the architect, and János Packh, his nephew, was the principal contractor. Its topography means that the main facade faces east. In 1822, the foundation stone was placed, and construction got underway. In 1839, József Hild took over construction when Packh was killed. The crucifix was affixed to the dome in 1846. In 1869, Hild finished the structure in the Classicist style. On the first floor is the Cathedral Treasury. It was established in 1886 with the intention of conserving and showcasing the cathedral's former liturgical instruments. It includes the "Matthias' Calvary," a gilded cross from the 15th century used for coronation oaths during the Árpád period. When Pope John Paul II visited Esztergom in 1991, he celebrated Holy Mass using the Suki chalice.
