Ephesus, Turkey

Ephesus is one of the most significant ancient cities in Turkey, located in the Aegean region near the modern-day town of Selçuk. It was once a thriving metropolis and an important center for commerce, culture, and religion in the ancient world. The city’s history dates back to the 10th century BC, and it rose to prominence during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Ephesus is best known for its well-preserved ruins, which offer visitors a glimpse into the grandeur of the ancient world.

The Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, once stood in Ephesus, though only its foundations remain today. Another highlight is the Library of Celsus, a stunning structure built in the 2nd century AD to honor the Roman governor Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus. The library’s facade is a prime example of Roman architectural brilliance and was once one of the largest libraries in the ancient world, housing thousands of scrolls.

Ephesus is also famous for its Great Theatre, which could seat up to 25,000 spectators and was used for both performances and public events. This theatre is remarkably well-preserved, and its acoustics remain impressive. The Curetes Street, lined with magnificent marble columns and statues, connects several important buildings, leading visitors through the heart of the city.

Today, Ephesus is an open-air museum and one of the most visited archaeological sites in Turkey. It offers a fascinating journey through time, showcasing the advanced engineering, architecture, and culture of ancient civilizations. The city’s ruins are easily accessible and provide an immersive experience into the history of one of the most powerful cities of antiquity.
